Coal Basin

PTD is proud to play a part in the restoration and activation of Coal Basin Ranch. Back in 1956 the 221-acre parcel served as coal mines producing 20+ million tons of coal for U.S. steel mills. The mines shut down in 1991 and the community rejected a federal government funded cleanup process, deciding to work with a smaller state supported effort. With many road blocks the job struggled to be completed. The Walton family stepped in, purchasing the land in 2015 to continue the restoration and activation efforts. Coal Basin Ranch officially opened in 2021 with 4.6 miles of trails focused on beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. In the future an additional 5.5 miles of trail will be added. Coal Basin Ranch serves as an important model for restoration and activation for similar land parcels in need of environmental restoration throughout the U.S. and beyond.
