Atwood Park is an outdoor educational facility home to a birds of prey exhibit, historic military bunkers, rock quarry, and a trail system used for a variety of recreational activities. A number of citizens representing various user groups – hikers, runners, cyclists, and skiers – approached the Rockford Park District to expand recreational opportunities at Atwood Park. Progressive Trail Design then developed their master plan.
For this design project, the goal of the master plan was to develop a multi-use trail system that embraced the existing park activities, satisfied users in a more functional and exciting way, respected all historical elements in the park, and remained sensitive to environmental impacts. Through utilizing as much of the existing trail system as possible and restoring poor quality trails back to their natural states, this plan improved the park’s overall trail sustainability.
